It is just toward end it begins to fall apart, but the smack-right up finale rescues they on ‘red’. Admirably staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it’ll have no higher problem in the way of living off their extremely unappealing identity.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The movie movements at the a simple speed, the fresh conversation try slick and you can characterisations generally energetic. Manhood Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes head new cast skillfully, because the investigator is actually played with considerable aplomb of the that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]

Richard Brody regarding the New Yorker indexed “Which terse and you will taut motion picture noir are considering the fresh new romantic and you will professional conflicts of term reputation, the brand new violent mastermind (starred by the Cock Powell) behind a snazzy illegal gambling establishment. The brand new film’s copywriter and director, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess game, to own mortal bet, between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) worked at the gambling enterprise and old good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic software, the cast’s suavely controlled gestures off like and you may menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and smartly cocky images (and additionally their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , detailed spectacle a low profile antique of one’s category.” [ 10 ]

Assortment gave the film kudos, composing, “This really is a sensible whodunit, which have attention to scripting, casting and you can camerawork lifting they above the mediocre. Photograph provides activity and you can suspense, and particular brief touches away from jokes to provide taste. Ace activities because of the Dick Powell, since a betting home overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, including within the rating . Although the spot follows a familiar pattern, the brand new characterizations are fresh and the shows sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you will topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney contact. Strange camera bases arrive once in a while in order to heighten notice and you may momentarily stop the eye. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing as the movie director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, modern copywriter and you can associate music producer, plus helps with making this a softer creation.” [ eleven ]

It is primarily a question of viewing Mr. Powell proceed through his paces smartly when you’re a giant cast regarding actors and you will actresses promote your conventional help. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable nothing lady which brings out the fresh finest in him and you will Ellen Drew is the easy and you can slinky vixen which becomes him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is fatty due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a unique in a position concert tour since a weary police inspector who finally closes possible. A great deal of taking and smoking is accomplished from the the alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
